Isle of Harris Funeral Association
Isle of Harris Funeral Association supported to invest in new hearse.
The volunteer-run Harris Funeral Association has received vital funding to acquire a replacement hearse. The 21-year-old existing vehicle was beyond repair and was about to be scrapped. Urgent action was needed as the community was faced with losing the community-run hearse service.
Muaitheabhal Community Wind Farm Trust stepped in with a £21,000 grant to purchase a newer vehicle. The Harris Funeral Association has been in existence for approximately fifty years. It provides the services of a hearse within the island of Harris at a financial cost which is much lower than could be supplied by other providers. This is possible because it is run on a non-profit making basis as a community enterprise.
Calum J Mackay, chair of the Harris Funeral Association, said: “We were absolutely delighted to receive such a significant grant from the Muaitheabhal CommunityTrust. It enabled the association to buy a good quality hearse which will hopefully serve the local community for a number of years. The cost of a reasonably new hearse is very high. The support provided by Muaitheabhal towards this very worthwhile community service is very much appreciated.”
